Grade 2:

Carriage Wheels & Whirligigs
Program explores the history of the wheel with emphasis on the evolution of the wheel from carriages, to bicycles, and automobiles. The craftsmanship, design, and decoration of the wheel is included in the tour. Students design a whirligig (an old fashion toy) to resemble a carriage wheel.

The Great American Race
Students will hear the story of the "The Great American Race" - a race between a train and a stagecoach. Early technology will be explored and students will color a poster of an early vehicle.

 

Grade 3:

Long Journey Westward
Students will travel westward, learning about Conestoga Wagons, Prairie Schooners, and Covered Wagons. Program includes a packing activity and constructing a Covered Wagon. In the final activity students will complete a scavenger hunt in the museum to identify various types of vehicles.

 

Grades 4 & 5:

Travel the National Road

Students will use a map of the National Road to complete questions on a worksheet. In the second activity students will build a section of the National Road, and then convert the section that they built into a twenty foot wide road bed. Also, included is a Toll Rate worksheet, scavenger hunt of the National Road exhibit, and a snack of foods served on the National Road.

Around the World in Eighty Minutes
Students explore early means of transportation with  hands-on activities. In Small groups students design early forms of transportation such as wagons, hot-air balloons, trains, and more. Pre-visit preparation: Read "Around the World in Eighty Days."

The Assembly Line
Students will learn about the "Ford Story", work on an assembly line to create a Model T car, and participate in a scavenger hunt. Includes a tour of the museum.

 

Grades 5 & 6:

Elections: Then & Now
Students will learn about the 1840 Election campaign in relationship to the National Road and how voters were motivated to vote. Boys will vote by paper ballot. Students will complete a worksheet and make a political ribbon. (Only offered in 2008)

 

Middle & High School Social Studies and History Classes
Tours of the museum are available and the option of the scavenger hunt for those who are interested.
